A Few Basic Trucking Guidelines
What is considered a legal load?
A legal load does not exceed standard Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations for height, width, weight, or length.
What is the legal width for truck loads?
In all U.S. states, the legal width is 8 feet 6 inches (or 102 inches).
What is the legal height for truck loads?
Height limits vary by state. A general rule of thumb:
- Kansas and westward: up to 14 feet
- Oklahoma: 13 feet 6 inches
- Eastern states: typically 13 feet 6 inches
What is the legal weight limit?
The combined weight of tractor, trailer, and freight must not exceed 80,000 lbs. Exceptions exist on secondary roads, but only for non-divisible loads (single-piece freight) with proper permits.
What are the length and overhang rules?
Length regulations vary by state and may apply to:
- Overall vehicle length
- Legal overhang limits A good rule of thumb for a 48′ trailer:
- 1 foot front overhang
- 3 feet rear overhang
How much weight can different trailers legally carry?
Trailer types affect legal weight limits:
- Flatbeds: 45,000–48,000 lbs
- Step decks (single drop): 42,000–47,000 lbs
- Double drops / Lowboys / RGNs: 37,000–40,000 lbs
- Stretch trailers / multi-axle lowboys: typically permitted for one-piece loads due to heavier trailer weight
Proper axle weight distribution is required for all loads.
What qualifies as a wide load?
Any load exceeding 8 feet 6 inches in width is considered over-width.
- Up to 12 feet wide: usually permitted without pilot cars
- 12–15 feet wide: typically requires 1–2 pilot cars
- Over 16 feet: may require police escorts, route restrictions, and utility coordination
Similar considerations apply to loads exceeding 15 feet in height or 55 feet in length. Oversized (OD) loads should be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Standard enclosed van trailers are typically:
